1. POLICE SHOOTING: BAIL WAS RIGHT, SAYS CHIEF
Manchester police have defended their decision to set Dale Cregan free on bail three months before yesterday's murder of two female PCs, Fiona Bone and Nicola Hughes. Cregan has now handed himself in to police and is accused of the killings. In June, Cregan was arrested in connection with the murder of two men, but was subsequently released. The chief constable of Greater Manchester said it is "absolutely normal" to bail people when there is insufficient evidence to charge them.

2. DANISH MAGAZINE TO PUBLISH KATE PHOTOS
Danish celebrity magazine Se og Hoer has said it will publish a 16-page spread containing topless photographs of the Duchess of Cambridge tomorrow. Yesterday, a Paris court banned Closer, the French magazine that first published the photographs, from distributing them. French police are seeking to identify the photographer who took the pictures.

4. ARSENAL WIN, MAN CITY LOSE IN EUROPE
Manchester City's hopes of winning the Champions League were dealt a blow last night when Cristiano Ronaldo scored the last-minute winner to give Real Madrid a 3-2 victory. In the other English club game, Arsenal hung on to beat Montpellier 2-1 with goals from Lukas Podolski and Gervinho after conceding an early penalty.

5. NATO ENDS JOINT PATROLS WITH AFGHANS
Nato's exit strategy in Afghanistan appeared to be upended yesterday when it emerged that US deputy commander Lt Gen James Terry had "indefinitely" suspended all joint-operation patrols of less than full battalion strength with Afghan troops following the spate of 'green-on-blue' attacks in which Afghan 'allies' have killed 51 Nato troops this year.
6. 'BOUNTY HUNTERS' TO TRACK IMMIGRANTS
The support services firm Capita is to provide "bounty hunters" to track down the more than 170,000 illegal immigrants who have refused to leave following the expiration of their visas, the UK Border Agency told MPs yesterday. The firm will be paid up to £40m, but only for the "number of people they make contact with and who leave".
7. FRENCH MAG PRINTS MOHAMMED CARTOONS
French embassies are on alert after the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo published cartoons today mocking a naked Prophet Mohammed amid continuing violent protests around the world over the controversial film, Innocence of Muslims. France's political and religious leaders called for restraint and riot police were deployed outside the magazine's Paris headquarters.

8. PAINKILLERS 'CAUSE HEADACHES'
Millions of people in the UK have "completely preventable" severe headaches caused by taking too many painkillers, doctors warned last night in a report for the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE). Prof Martin Underwood from Warwick Medical School said taking too many pills "can end up getting into a vicious cycle".
9. HOMOPHOBIA, RACISM 'RIFE IN FOOTBALL'
Racism and homophobia remain a "significant problem" in British football, according to a report from a committee of inquiry of MPs responding to "continuing concerns" following cases involving Luis Suarez and John Terry. Chairman John Whittingdale said "recent incidents of racist abuse in the UK highlight that there remain significant problems".

10. HOT TICKET: IBSEN'S HEDDA REVAMPED
The Old Vic's new adaptation of Henrik Ibsen's masterpiece 'Hedda Gabler' has opened to glowing reviews. Sheridan Smith of 'Legally Blonde' fame stars as Hedda, a frustrated 19th Century housewife who willfully destroys the lives of those around her. "Thrilling", says the Telegraph. Until 10 November.
