1. POLICE SHOOTING: BAIL WAS RIGHT, SAYS CHIEF

Manchester police have defended their decision to set Dale Cregan free on bail three months before yesterday's murder of two female PCs, Fiona Bone and Nicola Hughes. Cregan has now handed himself in to police and is accused of the killings. In June, Cregan was arrested in connection with the murder of two men, but was subsequently released. The chief constable of Greater Manchester said it is "absolutely normal" to bail people when there is insufficient evidence to charge them.
