1. POLICE: WE DID NOT PROTECT JIMMY SAVILE
West Yorkshire police have published a report into their dealings with Jimmy Savile and say there is “no evidence” that the DJ was protected from arrest or prosecution because of his close relationship with the force. The report admits that there was an “over-reliance on personal friendships” between Savile and officers.

2. BRITISH OLYMPIAN DIES IN YACHT CAPSIZE
Andrew ‘Bart’ Simpson, a British Olympic yachtsman who won gold in 2008 and silver in 2012, has died after a catamaran capsized during training for the Americas Cup in San Francisco bay yesterday. 3. ARIEL CASTRO MAY FACE DEATH PENALTY
Ariel Castro, suspected of kidnapping and raping three young women and holding them prisoner in his Cleveland, Ohio, home for a decade, could face the death penalty. 4. CAMERON IN RUSSIA FOR SYRIA TALKS
David Cameron visits Russia today for talks with President Vladimir Putin on Syria. The two men will meet at Putin’s summer retreat in the Black Sea resort, Sochi. 5. ARCHBISHOP ‘DID NOT REFER ABUSE CLAIMS’
A former Archbishop of York, David Hope, now Lord Hope, failed to refer claims of sexual abuse made against a priest to the police in 1999 and 2003, according to The Times. The claims were made against the former Dean of Manchester, Robert Waddington, and involved a schoolboy and a cathedral choirboy.
6. BORIS ISLAND GETS MPS’ THUMBS DOWN
London Mayor Boris Johnson’s dream of building a new airport in the Thames Estuary – dubbed ‘Boris Island’ - has received a setback. The Commons Transport Committee has rejected the proposal as too expensive and a threat to wildlife. Instead it is urging the government to back a third – and possibly even fourth – runway at Heathrow.
7. NAVY JET ‘CAN’T LAND IN HOT WEATHER’
A report by the National Audit Office has revealed that a U-turn over an order for new jump jets which was cancelled and then reinstated has cost the country £74m. It also warned that the version of the Joint Strike Fighter ordered for aircraft carriers can’t land in “hot, humid and low pressure weather conditions”.
8. DHAKA SURVIVOR FOUND AFTER 17 DAYS
A young woman has been found alive in the wreckage of the Dhaka garment factory which collapsed in Bangladesh 17 days ago. Rescuers had given up hope of finding survivors and were removing decomposing bodies from the site when they discovered the woman, named Reshma.
