1. STATE OF EMERGENCY AS SCORES DIE IN EGYPT

Egypt has declared a state of emergency after violence spread from Cairo to Suez and other provinces. At least 95 people are dead according to the security forces who used bulldozers to clear two camps occupied by supporters of the ousted President Morsi this morning – but the pro-Morsi Muslim Brotherhood claims hundreds have been killed.

2. COALITION RETURNS SPINSTER'S CASH

The Conservative Party and the Liberal Democrats have bowed to public pressure and agreed to hand a pensioners' £520,000 legacy to Treasury. News that Joan Edwards' money, thought to have been meant for the national good, had been pocketed by the government as a political donation, sparked a public outcry.

3. ED MILIBAND EGGED AT STREET MARKET

Labour leader Ed Miliband was struck by an egg today during a campaign visit to a Walworth market in south London. In his first public appearance since his summer holiday, Miliband was campaigning on the rising cost of living. But the egg-thrower, named as Dean Porter by the Daily Telegraph, felt he was failing to stand up for the poor.

4. HEMEL HEMPSTEAD 'UGLIEST' UK TOWN

Hemel Hempstead has been voted the UK's ugliest town ahead of other visually offensive settlements including Luton, Bracknell and Slough. Sam Jordison, the creator of the annual Crap Towns UK survey, said: “I know exactly why Hemel did so well in the poll. I’ve been there once. And once was more than enough.”

5. PERU DRUGS ARREST: WOMEN IN CUSTODY

Two women arrested at Lima airport with £1.5m of cocaine in their bags remained in custody today awaiting a court appearance. Michaella McCollum, from Northern Ireland, and Melissa Reid, from Scotland, said they were forced at gunpoint to carry the packages. Reid's family said there was "no way" she would have willingly trafficked drugs.

6. SOUTH 'CHEATED' BY RAIL FARE RISE

Ministers are facing a battle over "warped" rail franchises that leave commuters in the home counties subsidising rail travel in the north. With a 4.1% rise in fares due next year, MPs have said the funding formula needs to change to stop passengers on the most-crowded commuter trains paying a premium to bankroll services elsewhere.

7. EXPLOSION ON INDIAN SUBMARINE TRAPS 18

At least 18 sailors are believed to be trapped on board an Indian submarine after an explosion at a Mumbai dockyard early today. A number of sailors jumped from the vessel after the blast, but a fire on board took several hours to put out. Rescuers said they "will not give up" until they reach crew trapped on the INS Sindhurakshak.

8. SKY CAMERAMAN DIES IN CAIRO CLASHES

A Sky News cameraman has been shot and killed while covering the latest outbreak of violence in Cairo. Mick Deane, 61, was part of a team including Middle East correspondent Sam Kiley reporting on disturbances in the Egyptian capital. Head of Sky News, John Ryley, paid tribute to an "experienced journalist" and "much-loved colleague".

9. WILSHERE SHOULD BE MY HEIR - GERRARD

Steven Gerrard has tipped his England team-mate Jack Wilshere to succeed him as captain, saying he has "no doubt" he could pass him the armband when he retires from international football. Gerrard was speaking ahead of tonight's friendly against Scotland. Wilshere, 21, said it was every "kid's dream to captain your country".

10. HOT TICKET: A GAME OF TWO BROTHERS

The adventure video game 'Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons' has been released in the UK. Players direct two brothers to work together on a journey to find and bring back the Water of Life to save their dying father. "An enchanting adult fairy tale," says the Daily Mirror. "One of the best titles of 2013," says Forbes.
