1. DUGGAN INQUEST PROMPTS CAMERA MOVE

Met police boss Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe says firearms officers will now wear video cameras in an effort to be “more open”. The move is prompted by anger yesterday after a jury decided Mark Duggan, whose shooting by police sparked the 2011 riots, had been lawfully killed - even though he was not carrying a gun.

2. JAPAN: FATAL BLAST AT CHEMICAL WORKS

At least five people have been killed in an explosion at a chemicals factory in central Japan, with 12 injured. The blast took place at a plant run by Mitsubishi Materials in the town of Yokkaichi in Mie prefecture as maintenance crews were working on a heat exchanger used in the production of silicon products.

Five dead after hydrogen blast rocks chemical plant in Japan

3. TESCO: LIKE FOR LIKE SALES DOWN 2.4%

Retail giant Tesco has blamed a “weaker grocery market” for a 2.4 per cent fall in like-for-like sales in the six weeks to 4 January, covering the usually prosperous Christmas period. Meanwhile, rival Morrisons also said it had made “disappointing” sales over Christmas, with a worse decline than Tesco of 5.6 per cent.

4. GRILLO SISTERS' FATHER ARRESTED

Michele Grillo, 66, the father of Italian sisters Francesca and Elisabetta Grillo, has been held by Italian police on suspicion of conspiring to sell cocaine and cannabis. There is no suggestion that the sisters - who were acquitted of defrauding Nigella Lawson and Charles Saatchi last year - are linked to Michele Grillo's case.

5. BODIES REMOVED FROM CRASHED CHOPPER

The bodies of four US servicemen killed when their Pave Hawk helicopter crashed in north Norfolk on a training exercise on Tuesday night have been removed from the aircraft. The victims were named as Capt Christopher Stover, Capt Sean Ruane, Technical Sgt Dale Mathews and Staff Sgt Afton Ponce.

6. AMANDA KNOX: I WON'T GO BACK TO ITALY

Amanda Knox, the American accused of killing her British flatmate Meredith Kercher, has said she will become a fugitive from justice if an Italian court decides later this month to uphold her murder conviction. Knox, 26, is facing the possible reinstatement of a hefty sentence for her alleged part in the death of the 21-year-old in 2007.

7. NAZI CHARGE FOR 88-YEAR-OLD FRENCHMAN

A young offenders court in France has charged an 88-year-old man with taking part in a Nazi atrocity nearly 70 years ago. The man has not been named as he was under 19 at the time. He denies helping the SS in the methodical shooting and killing by fire of 642 men, women and children in the village of Oradour-sur-Glane.

8. BORIS WANTS WATER CANNON FOR MET

London mayor Boris Johnson wants water cannon ready for use on the streets of London by this summer, according to official letters. Public consultations on the deployment of water cannon will begin within weeks and a formal decision is due to be made next month.

9. BIG FREEZE IN UK THIS WEEKEND

Britain is braced for the big freeze this weekend as the ongoing rain which has flooded parts of country in will be joined by freezing temperatures and snow. The rain will continue as sub-zero temperatures set in, with a high chance of snow in the north, weather experts have warned.

10. HOT TICKET: STEALTH IOS GAME, REPUBLIQUE

The first episode of stealth survival game, Republique, has been released for iOS mobile devices. Players use their touch screens to help a young woman called Hope escape an oppressive police state by hacking video cameras, scouting areas and guiding her to safety. "Good, sneaky fun," says the Washington Post.
