1. THAMES STILL RISING AS 4,000 HOMES AT RISK

Fourteen severe flood warnings are in place for Berkshire and Surrey where the rising river Thames has now put 4,000 homes at risk, with hundreds of lesser alerts issued. Heavy rain is expected in south Wales and southwest England, while there are warnings of snow and ice in Scotland and Northern Ireland.

2. BRITAIN ‘COULD STAY FLOODED UNTIL MAY’

Scientists at the British Geological Survey have warned that groundwater levels are now so high the UK could remain on a high flood risk until May. Even if the rains stop now, with so much flooding groundwater will keep rising for another two months, flooding cellars, closing roads and causing pollution from sewers.

3. BARCLAYS CUTS 12,000 JOBS AS PROFITS FALL

Barclays has announced 12,000 redundancies as it battles to cut costs after a sharp fall in profits at the end of last year. The news came hours after the bank revealed that it had increased bonuses paid to staff last year. The total bonus pool for 2013 was £2.38bn, a rise of ten per cent from 2012.

4. TUBE STRIKE OFF AFTER DEAL STRUCK

The threat of a second 48-hour strike on the London Underground has been averted after both unions involved in the dispute reached a deal with Tube bosses.The RMT and TSSA suspended their industrial action hours before their members were due to walk out over in a row over staffing levels. More talks will now be held.

5. MILITARY PLANE CRASHES IN ALGERIA

An Algerian military transport plane carrying more than 100 people has crashed in the north-east of the country. Early reports say there are no survivors. The plane - thought to be a Hercules C-130 - is said to have come down during bad weather in a mountainous area of Oum al-Bouaghi province. It was carrying 99 passengers and four crew.

6. LIKE: ZUCKERBERG GIVES $1BN TO CHARITY

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg was the largest charity donor on US public record last year, giving away almost $1bn. With his wife Prischilla Chan, Zuckerberg donated 18 million Facebook shares to a foundation which invests and manages charitable funds. Meanwhile, Bill Gates gave $181.3m to charity.

7. BABY MAULED TO DEATH BY 'PIT-BULL' DOG

An 11-month old baby was mauled to death by an "American pit-bull type" dog which attacked her while she was asleep in her bed, say police. Ava-Jayne Marie Corless died on Monday night after the incident in Blackburn. Her mother Chloe King, 20, and her boyfriend, who were in the house at the time, have been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter.

8. CHILD STAR SHIRLEY TEMPLE DIES AGED 85

Hollywood child star Shirley Temple, who rose to fame in the 1930s through films including Bright Eyes and Curly Top, has died at the age of 85. She passed away at her home in California on Monday her family have confirmed. She starred in 43 films before retiring in 1950 at the age of 22. In 1935 she became the youngest ever Oscar winner, at the age of six.

9. JACKSON ANGRY OVER FISHBURNE GAFFE

American actor Samuel L Jackson has taken a US TV host to task after he confused him with Laurence Fishburne. KTLA reporter Sam Rubin asked Jackson about a car advert in which Fishburne reprises his role from The Matrix. "We don't all look alike! We may all be black and famous but we don't all look alike," said Jackson.

10. HOT TICKET: DAVID HOCKNEY'S PRINTS

An exhibition of David Hockney's prints has opened at the Dulwich Picture Gallery, London. David Hockney, Printmaker features 100 prints from Hockney's 60-year career, including his well-known A Rake's Progress series and portraits of famous friends. "Joyous," says the Daily Telegraph. Until 11 May.
