1. KARACHI TERROR: TALIBAN RESPONSIBLE

The Taliban have claimed responsibility for an attack on Karachi airport that left 28 dead, many of them airport staff. This morning witnesses reported gunfire briefly restarting after Pakistani army commandos said they had won control of the building in a six-hour battle with the attackers. The airport has now reopened. The raid casts doubt over the future of Taliban peace talks.

2. VEGAS: POLICE SHOT DEAD EATING PIZZA

Five people have died in Las Vegas, where a man and woman shot and killed two police officers who were eating pizza in a café, then entered a nearby shop and killed another person, before shooting themselves. There was no obvious motive. One witness said they shouted, “This is a revolution!”

'This is a revolution': couple go on murder spree in Las Vegas

3. OFSTED : 'INTIMIDATION' IN BIRMINGHAM SCHOOLS

Ofsted chief Michael Wilshaw has delivered his report on a "Trojan Horse" plot by hard-line Muslims to take control of Birmingham schools. He said "a culture of fear and intimidation" had taken hold in some schools where headteachers were "marginalised or forced out of their jobs". Ofsted inspected 21 schools in the city, six have been placed in special measures.

4. CLEGG PLEDGES TO TAX THE RICH

Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg has pledged to wipe out the financial deficit by increasing taxes on the rich rather than through spending cuts. He added that his party would borrow money to fix Britain's road, rail and water networks. His speech at Bloomberg in London came after the lib Dems finished sixth in a by-election last week.

5. BROWN: SCOTS ‘NOT GETTING FULL PICTURE’

Gordon Brown has intervened in the Scottish independence debate again, telling voters they are not getting the “full picture” about the economic consequences of independence and warning that Scotland would become a “more unequal country”. He also said the ‘no’ campaign had been “patronising”.

6. POLICE ABANDON MCCANN SEARCH AREA

UK police investigating the 2007 disappearance of Madeleine McCann have finished searching their first target site - using ground radar, rescue dogs and digging - without finding any new evidence there, according to Sky News. The search is expected to resume in new areas just outside Praia da Luz.

7. VETERAN'S MEDALS STOLEN ON D-DAY

A 92-year-old former serviceman had his medals stolen on the anniversary of D-Day when he answered the door to a bogus caller. Eleven medals were taken from the man’s home in Whetstone, north London, by a man who claimed to be from the “water board”. The veteran has not been named.

8. BLATTER ACCUSES FIFA CRITICS OF RACISM

Fifa president Sepp Blatter has insisted that allegations of corruption at football's governing body are motivated by "discrimination and racism". All but one of Fifa's major sponsors, including Coca-Cola, Adidas and BP, are now demanding an investigation into the decision to award the 2022 World Cup to Qatar, dogged by claims of bribery.

9. COMEDIAN RIK MAYALL DIES AGED 56

Comedian Rik Mayall has died at the age of 56. His death, on Monday morning, was confirmed by a spokesperson for his management company. Mayall shot to stardom playing anarchist student 'Rick' in influential 1980s sitcom The Young Ones. He also starred alongside his friend Ade Edmondson in Bottom, and played MP Alan B'Stard in The New Statesman.

10. HOT TICKET: SPACEY'S CLARENCE DARROW

Kevin Spacey's solo show, Clarence Darrow, has opened at the Old Vic, London. As the famous American defence lawyer Darrow, Spacey recreates some of the key moments that established his reputation as a courtroom legend and civil rights hero. "Spellbinding," says the Daily Telegraph. Until 15 June.
