1. MH17: RECORDERS AND BODIES HANDED OVER

Ukrainian rebels have handed over the black box flight recorders from flight MH17 to Malaysian officials and a train carrying the bodies of the victims has left rebel territory. The remains will now be flown to the Netherlands for identification. However, international monitors say the plane's wreckage has been tampered with.

2. CAMERON UNVEILS ANTI-FGM MEASURES

David Cameron has announced new measures aimed at ending female genital mutilation "within a generation". Speaking at a global summit on the practice in London he unveiled a £1.4m prevention programme, and said that parents would now face prosecution if their daughters are cut.

Prince George’s first birthday has been marked by the release of two new family photographs, showing the third-in-line to the throne transfixed by a butterfly, sitting with his mother and father at the Natural History Museum in London. He is to enjoy a birthday party at Kensington Palace later today.

4. MILIBAND: ‘WARM’ TALKS WITH OBAMA

Labour leader Ed Miliband has enjoyed “very warm and friendly” talks with US president Barack Obama at the White House. Obama looked in for 25 minutes as Miliband met US national security advisor Susan Rice, in a pre-planned ‘walk-by’. They discussed MH17 and Scots independence.

5. WOMAN BITTEN BY POLICE DOG DIES

A 73-year-old Middlesbrough woman who was bitten by a police dog after she gave permission for it to search her garden for a suspected burglar has died of her injuries. The Independent Police Complaints Commission will investigate Irene Collins’s death. Her family say they are “devastated”.

6. LITVINENKO PUBLIC INQUIRY LAUNCHED

A public inquiry into the death of Russian dissident Alexander Litvinenko has been announced by Home Secretary Theresa May. The former KGB officer, who had ties to MI6, died after he was poisoned with radioactive polonium in London in 2006. There have been claims he was killed on the orders of the Kremlin.

7. DOWNEY JR HIGHEST-PAID ACTOR ONCE AGAIN

Robert Downey Jr has been named as the highest-paid actor in Hollywood for the second year running. The list, compiled by Forbes magazine, suggests the Iron Man star earned $75m (£43m) in the last 12 months. Second place on the list goes to Dwayne Johnson, aka The Rock, star of GI Joe.

8. DEATH TOLL KEEPS RISING IN GAZA

International efforts to broker a ceasefire in Gaza are continuing as the death toll rises. So far more than 600 Palestinians and 29 Israelis have been killed. Dozens of Palestinian children are among the dead, says the UN, and most victims are civilian. US Secretary of State John Kerry says an Egypt will formulate the framework of any ceasefire.

9. US PLANNED SPYING STATION ON MOON

Newly-declassified documents show the US military planned to install a listening station on the moon to facilitate spying. Project Horizon was dreamt up in 1959, years before the moon landings. They also hoped to test a nuclear bomb on the moon, even discussing the effects of radiation on alien life.

10. HOT TICKET: AMADEUS REVIVAL CHICHESTER

A revival of Peter Shaffer's Amadeus has opened at the Chichester Festival Theatre. Rupert Everett stars as ageing composer Antonio Salieri, who is tortured by the popularity of foul-mouthed genius, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and plots to destroy him. "Superb," says the Daily Telegraph. Until 2 August.
