1. UKRAINE IN 'CEASEFIRE DEAL' WITH REBELS

The Ukrainian government says it has signed a preliminary protocol to start a ceasefire with pro-Russian rebels in the east of the country. President Petro Poroshenko made the announcement as Nato leaders, holding a two-day summit in Wales, worked on tough new sanctions designed to end Russia's alleged support of the separatists.

2. US COMIC JOAN RIVERS DEAD AT 81

Famously lewd comic and TV host Joan Rivers died in New York at the age of 81 yesterday, her daughter Melissa has said. The pioneering female stand-up had been on life support in Mount Sinai Hospital since suffering a heart attack last week while undergoing an operation on her vocal chords.

3. LONDON BEHEADING SUSPECT IN HOSPITAL

Police say they are confident that the murder of Palmira Silva in her Edmonton garden yesterday was not related to terrorism. The 82-year-old was reportedly beheaded. A 25-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder and police are not looking for anyone else. He is being held under police guard in hospital where he is being questioned.

4. APPLE BOOSTS ICLOUD SECURITY

Apple is to bolster security on iCloud accounts after pictures of celebrities including Jennifer Lawrence were hacked and published on line. Tim Cook said Apple would alert users when someone tries to change an account password, restores iCloud data to a new device, or when a device logs into an account for the first time.

5. WOOLF TO LEAD SEX ABUSE INQUIRY

Fiona Woolf, the Lord Mayor of London, will lead a government inquiry into historical child abuse allegations involving senior Westminster and Whitehall figures. She replaced Lady Butler-Sloss, who stood down in July. Woolf, a city lawyer, will head a panel including child abuse experts and at least one victim of abuse.

6. E-CIGARETTE FEARS ‘ARE ALARMIST’

A team of researchers from University College London says warnings about e-cigarettes posing risks to passive smokers and perpetuating addiction are “alarmist” and add that increased use could save thousands of lives every year. Last week the World Health Organisation called for public use to be banned.

7. DAVE LEE TRAVIS AN 'OPPORTUNIST'

DJ Dave Lee Travis has been described in court as an "opportunist" who groped young women who were "alone with him or in vulnerable positions". The 69-year-old is being retried on counts of indecent assault and sexual assault, after a jury failed to reach a verdict on the charges earlier this year. He faces an new indecent assault charge.

8. NATO ANNOUNCES RAPID REACTION FORCE

Nato has agreed to set up a rapid-reaction force, with a quarter of the troops provided by the UK. The 4,000-strong "spearhead group" has been established to counter concerns over the Ukraine crisis and the rise of Islamic State militants. It will initially be deployed to the Baltic region but can be "anywhere in the world" within five days.

9. DREADNOUGHT DINO IMPERVIOUS TO ATTACK

Scientists say a newly-discovered species of dinosaur, found in Argentina, was so big it was impervious to attacks from other creatures. The animal was longer than two London buses and weighed more than a Boeing 737. It had a “weaponised” tail, and would have “feared nothing”, the scientists say.

10. HOT TICKET: RETRO THRILLER THE GUEST

Psychological thriller The Guest opens in UK cinemas today. Downton Abbey's Dan Stevens stars as a soldier who returns from Afghanistan to visit the family of a fallen comrade but begins to arouse suspicions that he has a sinister hidden agenda. "A real kick," says Variety.
