1. Hammond to drop Osborne's surplus target

The Chancellor will tell the Conservative Party conference today that he is dropping his predecessor George Osborne's target of achieving a budget surplus this parliament. Philip Hammond will also unveil a £3bn home-building package and remind Tory members the party was elected on a "promise to restore fiscal discipline".

2. Colombia: Voters reject Farc peace deal

Colombian voters have rejected a peace deal with Farc rebels, with critic saying the terms were too lenient to the group. The narrow referendum victory for "no" reversed earlier poll results and came on a 37% turnout on a day of torrential rain. President Juan Manuel Santos pledged to keep pushing for peace.

3. Hungarian immigration referendum invalid

Hungary has declared invalid yesterday's referendum on migrant quotas after less than half the voting population turned out. Of those who did vote, a majority of 95% backed Prime Minister Viktor Orban's plan to close the doors to new migrants. Despite the decision, Orban said the vote gave him a mandate to argue with the EU.

4. Kim Kardashian West robbed at gunpoint in Paris

Kim Kardashian West, the reality TV star, was held at gunpoint in her Paris hotel room by an armed gang who stole millions of dollars' worth of jewellery, say police. Reports say the raid was carried out by five men dressed as police and armed with handguns. Kardashian West's rapper husband, Kanye West, ended a live show early after being told of the attack.

5. Kidnap fears over missing RAF serviceman

The mother of an RAF serviceman missing for more than a week says police are considering the possibility he may have been kidnapped. Corrie McKeague, 23, who is based at RAF Honington, was last seen in Bury St Edmunds. A police helicopter, 26 officers, RAF police and volunteers have been searching around the base and the town.

6. Powerful hurricane threatens Caribbean

One of the most powerful Atlantic storms in recent years is moving towards Jamaica, Haiti and Cuba. Hurricane Matthew has already caused flooding in the Jamaican capital, Kingston, which has been lashed by rain and high winds. Haiti is expected to be worse hit, with a hurricane warning in place and fears rains will bring landslides and floods.

7. US beats Europe to regain the Ryder Cup

The US has regained the Ryder Cup for the first time since 2008, defeating Europe with a convincing 17-11 win at Hazeltine. Ryan Moore beat Lee Westwood at the 18th, taking the US to 15 points. US captain Davis Love said his side had been criticised for "not coming together" in the past but had proved they could do so.

8. Virgin Trains East Coast strike starts

Workers on Virgin Trains East Coast have started a 24-hour strike in protest at threatened job cuts and disputes over working conditions and safety. According to the RMT union, around 1,800 staff have walked out. Virgin Trains say it will run a full timetable on the line, which links Inverness, Edinburgh and London.

9. Liam Gallagher ready for Oasis reunion

Former Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher says he is ready for a band reunion and his "bags are packed" - but he won't go "cap-in-hand" to his older sibling Noel. The brothers' fights were a constant feature of the band's career. Gallagher was speaking at the launch of Supersonic, a new documentary about the band.
