Volkswagen ID Crozz SUV 2021: ID.4 name, spy shots, specs, price and release
German firm’s second EV is spied testing in production-spec. Here’s what we know
The next model in Volkswagen’s all-electric ID range has been spotted testing in production guise for the first time.
Revealed as the ID Crozz concept (pictured top) at the Shanghai Motor Show in 2017, the new electric SUV will form a key part of VW’s push to become an EV leader by 2025 - spearheaded by the ID.3 hatchback later this year.
Although the most recent spy shots of the ID Crozz, also known as the ID.4, show the car in production-spec, the SUV is still some way from making its public debut. It’s estimated that the car will debut in late 2020 at the earliest, with sales expected to kick off a year later.

What will it be called?
The SUV is currently being referred to as the ID Crozz, after the concept version that debuted two years ago.
However, Auto Express calls it the ID.4. This seems to tally with VW’s nomenclature for its EV range, with its first electric car - due to arrive later this year - being named the ID.3.
But as VW has yet to confirm the name of the crossover, we’ll use the concept’s name for the time being.
Price and release
The ID Crozz will probably cost “just several grand” more than the ID.3 hatchback, which is priced at £25,500, says Motor1.
Production is due to kick off in “late 2020/early 2021”, the motoring site says, with sales expected to get under way a few months later.
Design
As the test mule is covered in heavy camouflage, it’s difficult to make out some of the SUV’s finer design details.
That being said, it’s clear that the production versions of the ID Crozz will have “more conventional SUV proportions” than the concept model, says Auto Express. The car in the spy shots has a more “practical” tailgate than the “coupe-inspired rear liftback” boot seen on the concept, while conventional wing mirrors replace the concept’s wing-mounted cameras.
Autocar, however, argues that VW will offer the car in two forms: a conventional SUV and a coupe-esque model similar to the original concept.
The ID Crozz also appears to carry over the LED headlight design of the ID.3, as well as the electric hatchback’s angular front bumper and sloping rear roofline.
Performance and range
According to Autocar, the ID Crozz will be powered by the twin electric motor configuration that appeared on the concept model two years ago. One of the motors will be mounted on the front axle and the other sitting on the rear, both of which will be connected to a 83kWh lithium ion battery.
The system will offer a total power output of 302bhp and 332lb-ft of torque, with the front motor producing 101bhp and the rear delivering 201bhp, the magazine notes.
VW has yet to confirm a real-world range for the crossover, but Autocar expects a range of 311 miles.
