F1 fans stunned by Ayrton Senna statue - best tweets and reactions

A life-size bronze statue of racing legend Ayrton Senna has been unveiled and Formula 1 fans absolutely love it.

Created by UK artist and sculptor Paul Oz, the Senna statue was revealed yesterday at the Autosport International Show taking place at The NEC in Birmingham.

Depicting Senna driving through the fabled Eau Rouge corner at Spa-Francorchamps, the statue marks nearly 25 years since the Brazilian’s last race. He died aged 34 in an accident at the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix.

Taking 12 months to complete and using 160kg of raw bronze, the statue costs £199,000 to buy from Memento Exclusives and 10% of the sale will go to the Senna Foundation.

Motorsport Magazine reports that as well as the one for sale, two more have been created with one going to the McLaren Technology Centre and the other to the Instituto Ayrton Senna.

Speaking about the statue’s pose, Oz said: “It’s a position alien to most and even many F1 fans don’t appreciate how extreme it is, even back in the 90s, although more so now. If there’s one thing I am happiest about with this statue is the dynamic and balance of the position.”

Eau Rouge is regarded as one of the most thrilling corners in F1 and in 1993 Senna said: “If you take away Eau Rouge, you take away the reason why I do this.”
