This week’s headlines have been dominated by the rapid spread of the new coronavirus, with Italy reporting 655 cases and 17 deaths as the outbreak sweeps across Europe. As of Friday morning, a total of 48 countries worldwide had reported cases of the Covid-19 disease - including more than a dozen in Europe - with more than 83,000 people infected.

Need a reminder about the other big stories over the past seven days? Clashes between Muslims and Hindus in New Delhi has left dozens of people dead, in the deadliest violence the Indian capital has seen in decades.

Europe has also been hit by outbreaks of violence, with protests on the Greek islands of Lesbos and Chios, home to large refugee camps. Rioters broke into a hotel housing riot police sent over from mainland Greece to control crowds, attacking and injuring officers.

In financial news, Rupert Murdoch’s The Sun and Sun on Sunday newspapers have suffered losses totalling £68m amid falling sales and phone hacking payouts. News Group Newspapers spent £54m on legal fees and damages related to the illegal interception of voicemails in the year to July 2019.
