After weeks of warnings, Vladimir Putin has given the order for a full-scale invasion of Ukraine, triggering what may be the biggest land war in Europe since the 1940s.
Kyiv and other major cities were hit by Russian shelling in the early hours of Thursday morning. By Friday, reports were emerging that troops had entered the capital city and that “sabotage groups” had arrived to target President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Zelenskyy has ordered the head of the Ukrainian military to repel the invading Russian army while inflicting “maximum losses”. The Ukrainian government has also declared martial law in the besieged eastern European country.

In a pre-recorded nationwide address to the Russian people, President Vladimir Putin claimed that he was seeking the “demilitarisation and de-Nazification” of Ukraine, a nation with a democratically elected Jewish leader. The Russian president also warned that Kyiv’s allies would “face consequences greater than any you have faced in history” if they came to the eastern European nation’s aid.
