Uber India has announced that it is rethinking "all driver screening processes" after a female passenger accused an Uber driver of rape last week.
The company announced that it will partner with women's safety groups in India and that it is "conducting a full audit" of its verification and reader feedback systems. "We are evaluating additional screening options to include background checks on all our driver partners in India above and beyond what is currently required," Uber wrote in a blog post on Thursday.
Uber India also noted that because of the rape accusation, it will suspend operations in New Delhi — a convenient announcement, since the city's transport department already banned the service on Monday.
