Republicans had a great Tuesday night — except in states that border the Pacific Ocean.

Oregon and California both re-elected their incumbent Democratic governors, John Kitzhaber and Jerry Brown, respectively, and Hawaii elected Democratic state Sen. David Ige as its next governor. Ige, an electrical engineer who unseated Gov. Neil Abercrombie in the Democratic primary, easily dispatched Republican former Lt. Gov. James "Duke" Aiona and independent candidate Mufi Hannemann. The governor race in Alaska, the final Pacific state, is too close to call, but late polls and early returns suggest a tough race for incumbent Gov. Sean Parnell (R).
