A German worker who was infected with Ebola died overnight, the St. Georg hospital in Leipzig, Germany announced Tuesday.

The 56-year-old man, whose name has not been released, was infected in Liberia and underwent "intensive medical procedures" before his death, according to The Associated Press. Forty-one U.N. staffers who worked alongside the man are under "close medical observation" for Ebola symptoms.

The man was diagnosed with the disease on Oct. 6, and he arrived at the St. Georg hospital on Oct. 9. He was the third Ebola patient flown to Germany for treatment.
