Two days after a 22-year-old gunman killed seven people including himself in Santa Barbara, California, Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) on Sunday lamented the "horrific, insane, mad occurrences" of gun violence in the nation and said he would prod Congress to revisit stalled gun control legislation.
Appearing on Face the Nation, Blumenthal said the tragedy was "a reminder of how we felt in the wake of Sandy Hook…when it seemed like we were on the verge of, potentially, legislation that would stop the madness and end the insanity." And bemoaning how even scaled-back attempts at gun control withered despite majority support in the Senate, he said he would urge Congress to once again address the issue, perhaps this time with a stronger focus on mental illness. --Jon Terbush
