Innovation of the week: A high-tech cast
An old-fashioned orthopedic cast is like a "medieval torture device"
Industrial designer Deniz Karasahin has a new take on casts that can "take care of the smell and itch issues," and even help heal broken bones faster, said Robert Sorokanich at Gizmodo. The Osteoid is a lightweight, 3-D-printed cast with ventilation holes and a low-intensity ultrasound generator that promises to heal bones faster. This form of therapy can "reduce healing time by nearly 40 percent with just one 20-minute treatment a day." Unfortunately, this clever cast is just a design concept for now.
