When The New Yorker's staff first learned of the massacre at France's Charlie Hebdo, "our first reaction, was not, as some would assume, to rush to the drawing board in response," says cartoon editor Bob Mankoff. But the New Yorker cartoonists did eventually pick up their pencils:
