On Monday, a court in Egypt sentenced 183 Muslim Brotherhood supporters to death, including 34 sentenced in absentia, on charges of killing 16 police officers in Kardasa. The policemen were killed after the military, led by current President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi (then the army chief), overthrew President Mohamed Morsi, a member of the Muslim Brotherhood.

Under Sisi, Egypt has outlawed the Brotherhood, and held mass trials of members, earning the condemnation of human rights groups. Egypt's courts have sentenced hundreds of Muslim Brotherhood members to death, though none of the executions has yet been carried out.
