Watch a 'fireball' meteor burn brighter than the moon

A 500-pound meteor lit up the skies Tuesday as it flew over Pennsylvania, Ohio, and New York with a flare brighter than the full moon.

Pennsylvania's WFMJ reports that the meteor, which NASA says flew at a speed of 45,000 miles per hour and originated in an asteroid belt near Mars and Jupiter, "appeared to be a fireball" and may have left meteorites on the ground near Kittaning, Pennsylvania.

According to the American Meteor Society, there have been at least 30 eyewitness reports from people who saw the so-called fireball. Watch the meteor burn bright and burn out in the video below. —Meghan DeMaria
