Proving the universal allure of fast cars, outrageous explosions, and nonsensical plots, Furious 7 coasted to a record-setting $143.6 million opening weekend. Captain America: The Winter Soldier held the previous record for an April debut after taking in $95 million last year.

The seventh installment in the Fast & Furious franchise, the film earned surprisingly good reviews after several previous installments debuted to wide mockery. While Furious 7 boasts an 81 percent score from ranking site Rotten Tomatoes, the second, third, and fourth films in the series average a woeful 33 percent.
