On Thursday, New York Mayor Bill de Blasio announced that the NYPD was adding protection to black churches across the city, following the shooting deaths of nine people at the Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina, Wednesday.

"There are so many people here who hail from South Carolina, and it's a very, very painful moment for all of us," he said during a news conference. "I want everyone to know there's no place in New York City for this kind of hatred." De Blasio said there was no "specific evidence" of any copycat attacks, DNAinfo reports, but "we, in this case, are going to reinforce key African-American religious institutions and be very watchful for anything that suggests any other type of attack."
