The U.S. team advanced to the quarterfinals in the Women's World Cup by defeating Colombia in yesterday's match. Colombia had succeeded in holding the Americans back during the first half of the game, but was a down a player after their goalkeeper, Catalina Perez, was taken out due to a red card. The U.S. team pulled ahead 2-0 and will play China in the quarterfinals on Friday in Ottawa.
Since the Women's World Cup began in 1991, the U.S. Women's team has won the championship title twice. The U.S. Men's team, by comparison, won third place in the World Cup in 1930. Their next best finish was in the quarterfinals in 2002, where they lost to Germany.
