Kurt Cobain's Unplugged sweater, lock of hair to be auctioned off

A discolored Manhattan brand sweater missing a button that would probably sell for a few dollars in a thrift store is expected to fetch $40,000 to $60,000 at auction Nov. 7, due to its very famous former owner.
The green cardigan was worn by Kurt Cobain during Nirvana's 1993 taping of MTV Unplugged. Julien's Live auction house describes it as a "blend of acrylic, mohair, and Lycra" with "a burn hole and discoloration near left pocket and discoloration on right pocket." The opening bid is $20,000, Rolling Stone reports, and the sweater also comes with a signed letter of authenticity from a "close friend of the Cobain family" who held onto the item. If you prefer your auction items cheaper and creepier, there's also a lock of Cobain's hair up for grabs, starting at $4,000. The hair was given to comic artist Dame Darcy by Cobain's widow, Courtney Love, who commissioned Darcy to use it to make a doll for daughter Frances; the hair being auctioned off is what was left over.
Julien's Live is set to auction off more than 350 rock-related items, including the drumhead used during The Beatles' 1964 appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show (likely to sell for between $800,000 and $1 million); John Lennon's acoustic Gibson guitar that was used to compose and record early songs like "Love Me Do" but wound up missing in the 1960s (opening bid $300,000); Elvis Presley's 24-karat gold leaf grand piano; Steven Tyler's insurance card; Pearl Jam lyrics handwritten by Eddie Vedder; and the pajamas Michael Jackson wore in the "Leave Me Alone" music video, Rolling Stone says.
