A Russian-built Antonov cargo plane crashed on Wednesday soon after taking off from the airport in Juba, South Sudan's capital. At least 41 people were killed, Reuters reports, including about 20 people on the aircraft and an unknown number of people on the ground.
The chartered flight was headed toward the Paloch oil fields in Upper Nile state, according to South Sudan presidential spokesman Ateny Wek Ateny, and one crew member and a child survived. There were also children among the dead, The Associated Press reports. The cargo plane crashed about a mile from the Juba airport, near the banks of the Nile River where people were fishing.
