CDC investigating a new E. coli outbreak linked to Chipotle
Chipotle is once again linked to an outbreak of E. coli, this time affecting diners in North Dakota, Kansas, and Oklahoma.
The Centers for Disease Control said Monday it was investigating the cases of five people who became sick between Nov. 18 and 26 with E. coli, one week after each one ate at a Chipotle restaurant. During an earlier outbreak in November that sickened people across nine states with a different strain of E. coli, 46 of the 53 people said they ate at a Chipotle in the days before they fell ill. Although at least 120 Boston College students reported getting sick after eating at a Chipotle this month, the company said that was likely not E. coli.
Chipotle spokesman Chris Arnold told USA Today the company has "completed a comprehensive reassessment of our food safety programs" and is now "in the process of implementing those programs, including high resolution testing of our ingredients, continuous improvement in the supply system based on testing data, and enhanced food safety training for all of our restaurant teams." Chipotle stock closed Monday down 3.5 percent to $522.01.
