Just one day after taking office as the mayor of the Mexican city of Temixco, Gisela Mota, a former federal member of Congress, was killed Saturday during an attack at her home.
Graco Ramirez, the governor of Morelos state, tweeted the news on Saturday, with El Universal reporting that Mota was ambushed by four gunmen in her residence. In 2015, several mayors were killed across Mexico, where many cities are under the control of drug gangs. Temixco has a population of 100,000, and is located about 60 miles south of Mexico City.
Update: Three people were arrested Sunday in connection with Mota's murder, and two suspects were killed after clashing with police. Attorney General Javier Perez Duron said the trio — a 32-year-old woman, 18-year-old man, and a minor — have been tied to several other crimes. Security measures have also been increased for all of Morelos state's mayors.
