The Texas state trooper who arrested Sandra Bland has been fired three months after being charged with perjury, The New York Daily News reports. A black woman from Chicago, Bland, 28, was found dead in her jail cell of apparent suicide after being arrested in July 2015.
Trooper Brian Encinia, who arrested Bland, has been accused of lying about the circumstances of Bland's arrest. Encinia's attorney has argued that the indictment is unfair because Encinia was reportedly looking out for his safety. The arrest was caught on his dashcam video, and was widely circulated.
Encinia may appeal his firing.
