Three Chicago police officers investigating suspected narcotics sales were shot Monday night, authorities said.

Their injuries are not life-threatening, department spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said. Four officers were in the Homan Square neighborhood when they encountered a man and woman in a "known drug area," Guglielmi said. The man ran and opened fire at the officers, hitting three of them, the Chicago Sun-Times reports. One officer returned fire, and the man was hit and killed, Guglielmi said. A witness told the Sun-Times that while it's not unusual to hear gunshots in the neighborhood, it's been "fairly quiet" over the past few months.
