Authorities say a man suspected of fatally shooting a police officer in Auburn, Massachusetts, was shot and killed Sunday by police after a manhunt that lasted several hours.
Officer Ronald Tarentino, 42, of the Auburn Police Department was allegedly shot by Jorge Zambrano, 35, early Sunday morning after Tarentino stopped his vehicle. On Sunday afternoon, officers tracked Zambrano down to a duplex in Oxford, and authorities say he came out of a bedroom closet, shooting at law enforcement. They returned fire, and Zambrano was killed. A Massachusetts State Police officer sustained a non-life-threatening injury during the shooting when he was hit in the shoulder.
Zambrano had an extensive criminal record, The Boston Globe records, and spent time in prison. Tarentino was a married father of three, described by neighbors as a "good guy" who walked his kids to school and shoveled snow for the elderly.
