Two U.S. citizens were among the 84 killed in Nice, France, on Thursday when a track plowed into a crowd celebrating Bastille Day, the State Department said Friday. Though the State Department has not identified the victims, multiple sources — including the family — have reported that the two Americans were a father and son, Sean Copeland, 51, and Brodie Copeland, 11, from Lakeway, Texas.
"We are heartbroken and in shock over the loss of Brodie Copeland, an amazing son and brother who lit up our lives, and Sean Copeland, a wonderful husband and father," the family said in a statement, the Statesman reported. The two were in Nice on a family vacation.
The State Department is working to determine if there were any other American victims. French President Francois Hollande has called the incident a terrorist attack. The suspected driver, a 31-year-old French national, was shot and killed by police.
