Special Counsel Robert Mueller has issued subpoenas for documents and testimony to Paul Manafort's former lawyer Melissa Laurenza and current spokesman, Jason Maloni, people familiar with the matter told CNN.
Until recently, Laurenza, of the Akin Gump law firm, represented Manafort, President Trump's onetime campaign chairman. It's unusual for the lawyer of a person being investigated to receive a subpoena, as it can raise attorney-client privilege issues, CNN says. It is unclear what information the investigators think they'll receive from Laurenza and Maloni.
U.S. officials with knowledge of the matter told CNN that Manafort is under investigation for possible tax and financial crimes, centering around the work he did for a pro-Russia political party in Ukraine.
