Chuck Schumer compares Trump to Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde after State of the Union
President Trump's State of the Union address was full of empty talk of bipartisanship that doesn't match with his rhetoric or actions, at least according to Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.).
Schumer told CNN Wednesday morning that the State of the Union was "not a good speech" and that Trump was "sort of like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" in that he simultaneously spoke of working with Democrats while also using language that is "so divisive." This "doesn't fly," Schumer said, also slamming the address as "political, divisive, calculating, and even nasty at times."
While Schumer told CNN Democrats "want to work with him," he said that Trump has "got to be real" and that it "can't just be words," also arguing the speech was hypocritical because the "first two years of the administration were not that at all" and "he loved hot button issues that inflamed his base and divided America." The State of the Union, Schumer felt, was just "more of the same."
