Elizabeth Warren out-raises Bernie Sanders in 2nd quarter
Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) announced Monday her presidential campaign raised $19.1 million in the second quarter of 2019, giving her the third-highest total of the 2020 candidates so far and putting her ahead of Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.).
Warren's $19.1 million comes in behind South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg, who announced he raised $24.8 million, as well as former Vice President Joe Biden, who raised $21.5 million. But it puts her ahead of her closest ideological rival, Sanders, who announced $18 million raised in the second quarter. During the first quarter of 2019, Warren raised significantly less than Sanders, bringing in $6 million to his $18 million. Warren in the second quarter also out-raised Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.), who announced a $12-million haul.
CNN notes that Warren's impressive total is in spite of her pledge not to hold high-dollar fundraising events, a promise also made by Sanders. Warren's campaign manager, Roger Lau, said on Monday that "to sum it up: We raised more money than any other 100 percent grassroots-funded campaign. That's big."
