New York Mets manager Carlos Beltran is the latest to lose his job over the Houston Astros cheating scandal, as the Mets announced Thursday that the parties had "agreed to mutually part ways," ESPN reports.
"This was not an easy decision," Mets COO Jeff Wilpon said in a statement. "Considering the circumstances, it became clear to all parties that it was not in anyone's best interest for Carlos to move forward as manager of the New York Mets."
In 2017, Beltran played the final season of his 20-year career in Houston, where, according to a report released on Monday by Major League Baseball, he was deeply involved in a sign-stealing scheme involving cameras, video monitors, and strategic trash can banging. He was hired to manage the Mets in November, but will leave the team without ever coaching a game. Beltran is now the fourth person to lose his job amid the fallout, along with Houston manager A.J. Hinch, Houston general manager Jeff Luhnow, and Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora. Ironically, none of them ever saw this coming.
