A magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck New Zealand's South Island early Monday, the U.S. Geological Survey said, less than 24 hours after an earlier quake hit the same area. The Monday quake hit at a depth of six miles about 75 miles northeast of Christchurch, the USGS said. Earlier on Sunday, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake centered north of Christchurch killed two people and damaged buildings, with tsunami waves caused by the quake arriving two hours later.
