Where to find the best veggie burgers in London and the UK
Creative takes that will surprise and impress vegetarians and meat-eaters alike
More and more of us are going veggie - even if only part-time - and restaurants around the UK are coming up with new ways to capitalise on the meat-free trend. Even the burger - that quintessential meat-lover icon - is not immune, with creative chefs coming up with truly mouthwatering vegetarian patties to compete with the best.
Here are a few of the meat-free burgers you’ll want to sink your teeth into:

One advantage of meat-free burgers is that they are often much cleaner to eat than the classic cheeseburger, but this Portobello messy masterpiece is piled high with toppings and sauces to give you the authentic sloppy satisfaction of devouring a burger - just with none of the meat. Beef is switched out for a braised field mushroom fritter drenched in garlic parsley butter atop a pile of lettuce, coleslaw and tarragon mayo, covered in a cheese sauce with a brioche bun.

Bleecker Burger - Veggie Burger
Most veggie patties are made from a relatively small selection of ingredients - beans and mushroom being two of the most familiar. Few can pull off what Bleecker has done - turning notoriously bland protein tofu into a succulent burger. Sandwiched between a classic sesame bun, the tofu wedge is deep fried and then smothered in hot sauce, blue cheese sauce, lettuce and onion.

Honest Burgers - Fritter 2.0
With 24 locations in London, Honest Burgers has become one of the capital’s favourite burger joints. The Fritter 2.0 is one of two vegetarian burgers on the chain’s menu, and shows that a great burger does not require beef. The patty is formed from a mixture of cauliflower, sweet corn and chickpea fritter, topped with cheddar cheese, tomato, red onion and lettuce. A drizzle of lime and coriander mayo and hot sauce gives this burger a kick.

MEATliquor – Halloumi mushroom burger
This burger is anything but dainty - a double decker of roasted Portobello and smoky halloumi cheese, drenched with French’s American mustard, ketchup, and then topped with pickles, lettuce and red onion to add the perfect crunch.
£8.25; https://meatliquor.com/
Dip & Flip – Potato Rosti Burger
Just because there’s no meat doesn’t mean veggie burgers can’t be total comfort food. Dip & Flip’s version takes crispy fried potatoes and an egg fried on the griddle. They then serve it up the same way as all their burgers, with ketchup, mustard, cabbage slaw, and pickles on a toasted brioche bun to make the perfect veggie hangover cure.
£7.10; https://www.dipandflip.co.uk/
Mildred’s – Bourbon Buffalo Chicken Burger
It should come as no surprise that this well-known vegetarian joint makes a mean meat-free burger. The bourbon buffalo mock chicken burger has a unique look -in fact, with its black charcoal brioche buns and bright orange filling, it looks like something from Halloween. However, the juicy mock-chicken and vivid buffalo sauce make for a flavour that is anything but scary.

Boom Burger – Veggie Boom
This carb and healthy-fat filled sandwich definitely won’t leave you hungry. A beef patty has been substituted for roasted sweet potatoes with fresh avocado salsa and rocket lettuce, all spiced up with some chilli jam. Boom Burger’s Jamaican twist gives this burger a sweet, salty, and spicy flavour profile - all smashed together in a classic bun.
