Where to stay on the Amalfi Coast
A glorious strip of beaches fringed with some of the Med's best beaches
With more than 4,700 miles of coastline, Italy has no shortage of beaches - but the most celebrated are to be found on the Amalfi Coast.
"With its cornice roads that wind along towering cliffs", says the Daily Telegraph, this stretch of the southern Sorrentine peninsula is also home to some of the best hotels in the Mediterranean.
Among them is the Hotel Santa Caterina in Salerno, with "standalone folly-suites tucked amongst the gardens, citrus groves, pergolas and arbours", the Telegraph reports. Joyfully, it combines "personality with glamour integrity and charm".

Yet you need not spend a fortune in one of Europe's most desirable and romantic destinations. Sant'Agata sui Due Golfi, overlooking the bay of Naples, "makes a good base for exploring the coast if you want to combine it with some walking" - and with doubles from just €90 (£76), it is hard to find a better value deal, says The Guardian.
Alternatively, you can experience the region from the sea via one of the many cruises that drop in on the area. Sorrento Gastronomy Discovery offers an excursion into the town's food markets with the ship's chef. "Sourcing local ingredients in Sorrento is a delicious diversion," says the Belfast Newsletter.
