Coffee-table couture: Dior by Christian Dior

The first volume in a very fashionable anthology celebrating the house's 70th anniversary focuses on its iconic founder

Few designers have shaped the landscape of modern style as much as Christian Dior. Ahead of his eponymous fashion house reaching its 70th anniversary next year, the first tome in a series recounting the label's legacy will be released this month, beginning with the formidable figure who started it all.

The visually stunning book, published by Assouline, traces the evolution of the couturier, taking in his era-defining creations from the seminal spring/summer collection of 1947 – the "New Look", which shocked with its rejection of post-war austerity - to Dior's elegant final clothing line, Fuseau. The volume shows the visual evolution of his collections through photography by Laziz Hamani, while renowned fashion historian and curator Olivier Saillard provides context to the pieces with insightful analysis of the designer's inspirations, influences and unique vision.

The subsequent instalments in the series will each be centred on Dior's successors as the creative head of the brand, including Yves Saint Laurent, Marc Bohan, Gianfranco Ferre, John Galliano, Raf Simons and Maria Grazia Chiuri.
