Five Noughties fashion trends making a comeback in 2017
It wasn't all baggy flares and velour tracksuits at the turn of the century. Here's the top picks for what to wear for the modern retro look
After trends from the Nineties such as tattoo-choker necklaces and slip dresses came back into style last year, the fashion of the Noughties is now receiving the same nostalgic nod from designers. While some pieces from the era might best be left in the fashion history books – think scarf crop tops, bakerboy caps and low-cut flared jeans – Portfolio has picked out five essentials to update your spring wardrobe.
Kitten heels
"Kittens have been quietly returning to the catwalks for a couple of seasons now," says Vogue, which praises Theresa May's much-loved footwear for being "practical and pretty in equal parts". They also "don't hinder the task at hand, whether that's running the country or running to a fashion show", it adds.

Gucci, Manolo Blahnik and Christian Dior are all on board, releasing kitten heels to have fashionistas purring this year.
Cargo trousers
Forget images of girl band All Saints, cargo trousers in 2017 offer a "polished utilitarian look", says W Magazine. Khaki and cargo were seen on the catwalks of Balenciaga, Marni and Stella McCartney, who has also brought the look to her first menswear collection.
Denim skirts
Button-up denim skirts are a strong look this spring – indeed, says W Magazine distressed denim of all sorts is back, with a resurgence of tattered jeans, skirts and dresses on the catwalks. Laura Larbalestier, of Brownsfashion.com, tells the Daily Telegraph that denim has "more attitude than ever before. We noticed a resurgence of white denim at Preen by Thornton Bregazzi and industry-favourite Rejina Pyo, as well as cut out statement pieces at Off White, Acne and Y Project."
Micro bags
Before everyone started carrying huge tote bags in the crease of their elbow, it was all about the tiny printed purse-bag, preferably by Louis Vuitton. Both the designer and the trend is back - Vogue reports that Louis Vuitton has now turned its Petite Malle mini bag into an iPhone case. Chloe's new Nile bracelet bag, featuring a glossy golden ring handle, has also been tipped to be a favourite this spring.
One shoulder
Last summer was the time for Bardot tops, but 2017 is taking an asymmetrical turn with the one-shoulder, says Glamour. The Noughties one-shoulder was usually limited to tank tops, but now it expands to shirts and jumpers, with the likes of Chloe, Self-Portrait and Yves St Laurent sending the look down the spring/summer runway.
