The next generation Volkswagen Scirocco will be "reinvented" as an all-electric sports coupe based on the company's electrified MEB platform, according to AutoExpress.
Volkswagen will use components and styling cues from the firm's "forthcoming ID family of pure-electric cars", the magazine reports. This will allow designers of the new vehicle to keep the current car's "compact dimensions" and offer "vastly improved interior space."
Dr Frank Welsch, the carmaker's research and development chief, told the magazine: "We are not clear on how we will do such a car and [we] are thinking whether we do an interesting concept based on our electric platform; this could be a great and fun car."

Performance details are scarce, but AutoExpress says the Scirocco will have a "modular" battery architecture that allows for several power options and an "anticipated electric range of between 200 and 375 miles".
The Scirocco EV is part of Volkswagen's push towards an electric future as the magazine says the sports coupe will be built on the company's upcoming MEB electric car production platform.
Volkswagen has multiple vehicles in the works that are expected to use the MEB architecture. Car magazine says an all-electric hatchback and microbus could join the Scirocco when the production platform officially launches in 2020.
