An overexcited driver has destroyed a McLaren 720S supercar after just one day of ownership.

Police in the city of Fairfax, Virginia, tweeted an image of the wrecked exotic car shortly after it hit a tree on Saturday. The crash was the result “of speed”, the post said, adding: “A reminder to slow down, or it could cost you.”

The British supercar - which has a price tag of around £210,000 - was delivered to the owner last Friday, The Washington Post reports. The crash took place at 7:45am (US Eastern Time) the following day in the Great Falls area, north of Fairfax.

The driver, who has not been identified, was “taken to the hospital with thankfully only non-life threatening injuries”, Fairfax County Police said on Twitter.

The McLaren 720S is one of the British carmaker’s most powerful and expensive supercars, with a 710bhp twin-turbo V8 engine that can achieve a top speed of around 212mph.

The car also features complex aerodynamic bodywork designed to provide grip at high speeds - although there is little evidence of this in the tweeted image of the crashed model.

This is not the first time that a road smash involving exotic cars has made headlines this year. In March, a Ferrari 458 and Porsche 718 Cayman GTS with a combined value of around £230,000 collided on a roundabout in Sheffield, resulting in significant damage.
