The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (Bafta) has unveiled the nominees for its 2019 film awards.

The Favourite, a darkly comic take on rivalry in the 18th-century court of Queen Anne, emerges as the academy’s own favourite, leading the pack with 12 nominations - five more than its closest rival, Neil Armstrong biopic First Man.

Olivia Colman, who scooped a Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical award at the Golden Globes earlier this week for her role as the monarch, is up for the Best Actress Bafta, with co-stars Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone nominated in the Best Supporting Actress category.

Colman’s competitors include Lady Gaga, whose performance in A Star Is Born made her the favourite to take the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Drama, and Glenn Close, who upended predictions to win the award on the night for her role in The Wife.

Gaga’s co-star Bradley Cooper is nominated in two categories, one for his performance as an aging rock star, and another for his debut behind the camera as the film’s director.

Other films bagging multiple nominations include Freddie Mercury biopic Bohemian Rhapsody, Alfonso Cuaron’s lyrical domestic drama Roma and BlacKkKlansman, Spike Lee’s true-life tale of a black detective infiltrating the KKK.

The winners will be revealed at the awards ceremony on 10 February.
