Charity of the week: Puppies Behind Bars

Puppies Behind Bars teaches prison inmates to train service dogs for disabled individuals and military veterans.

For those with a disability, being matched with a well-trained service dog can be a life-changing experience. Puppies Behind Bars

(puppiesbehindbars.com) teaches prison inmates to be “puppy raisers,” who train guide dogs for disabled individuals and military veterans. Since 1997, inmates from six correctional facilities in New York, Connecticut, and New Jersey have trained more than 740 service puppies. Not only does the organization produce highly trained service dogs and explosives-detection canines for law enforcement, it also provides inmates with an opportunity to give back to the community. For the past several years, the organization’s Dog Tags program has focused on providing dozens of service dogs to wounded veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan.
