Getting the flavor of...A rock legend's roots
The small town of Hibbing holds an annual arts festival in Bob Dylan's honor.
A rock legend's roots
The times are “not a-changin’” in Bob Dylan’s hometown, said Garth Woolsey in the Toronto Star. On the streets of tiny Hibbing, Minn., “the vibe is mid-20th century more than early 21st,” so much so that “you half expect to see vintage Chevys” and men in fedoras. Dylan said as much himself recently: “Whatever was in the air before is probably still there,” he told Rolling Stone. Dylan enthusiasts make sojourns just to breathe that air, as well as to view a modest library exhibit or enjoy an annual arts festival held in the songwriter’s honor. Worth visiting outside town is the Hull Rust Mahoning Mine, a huge iron mine that’s billed as “the Grand Canyon of the north.” If you want your own name to be forever attached to Hibbing, visit the Greyhound Museum, dedicated to the bus line. There, right in Dylan’s hometown, you can have your name inscribed on a sidewalk brick.

The new buzzword in Las Vegas is “daylife,” said Laura Daily in The Dallas Morning News. “Sure you’ll gamble and party after dark,” but casinos are increasingly focusing on coaxing patrons into spending when the sun’s still high. Their solution is “day clubs”—adults-only outdoor lounges that feature pools, cabanas, and lots of booze. Oh, yeah: At the so-called “European-style” pools, swimsuit tops are optional (though female guests are said to be so slow to embrace the policy that the casinos are paying ringers, to lure in oglers.) Some popular choices: Mandalay Bay’s upscale Moorea Beach Club, perched above an 11-acre sand beach and a wave pool; MGM Grand’s Wet Republic; and the Venus Pool at Caesars Palace. The Tropicana, one of Vegas’s oldest casinos, is the latest to the scene: Its bikini-clad waitresses serve guests in tepee-style cabanas. But be warned: “Day clubs will cost you.” Tables cost $100 and up, while cabanas run $2,000 or more per day.
