Soccer riot turns fatal
The week's news at a glance.
Paris
A French soccer fan was shot dead by a police officer last week during an outburst of anti-Semitic violence following a match against an Israeli team. After Paris Saint-Germain lost the match to Hapoel Tel Aviv, 100 white French fans turned on a French Jewish supporter of Tel Aviv, chasing him and shouting "filthy Jew." When a black police officer stepped in, the crowd turned on him, making monkey noises and yelling, "Filthy black, we're going to get you." During the scuffle, the officer drew his gun and shot two men, killing Julien Quemener, 25. This week, hundreds of PSG fans held a silent vigil under a banner reading, "Murdering authorities—truth for Julien."
