Holocaust cartoons on exhibit
The week's news at a glance.
Tehran
More than 200 cartoons mocking the Holocaust went on display in an Iranian museum this week. The cartoons were chosen from more than 1,200 entries in a contest announced last February by the newspaper Hamshahri, as a Muslim response to the controversy over Danish cartoons mocking the Prophet Mohammed. Islam forbids images of the prophets, and the Danish cartoons sparked worldwide riots by Muslims. The drawings are on display until next month, in a Tehran exhibition hall next to the Palestinian Authority’s embassy, which was Israel’s diplomatic office in Iran before the 1979 Islamic Revolution. The winning cartoonist will receive a $12,000 prize.
