Some like it hot
The week's news at a glance.
Yenagoa, Nigeria
The governor of a Nigerian state dressed as a woman to sneak out of Britain and avoid money-laundering charges, Nigerian authorities said last week. Diepreye Alamieyeseigha was arrested in London in September on charges of laundering some of the millions he is alleged to have stolen from the state government. His passport was confiscated and he was supposed to appear in a British court this month. But he turned up last week in Yenagoa, Nigeria, saying that God had brought him home. Actually, officials said, he put on a dress and wig to match the false travel documents that allowed him to flee. “It is a new low,” Nigerian lawyer Gani Fawehinmi told The New York Times. “And in Nigeria, that is saying something.”
