For New Orleans visitors who get overwhelmed by the French Quarter, "there's a more relaxing option a streetcar ride away," said Lindsey Tramuta at The New York Times. The Henry Howard Hotel, a double-gallery 1867 Garden District townhouse, was for years a rundown inn before a recent overhaul gave its 18 rooms a "fun and elegant" upgrade.
Local culture is wittily celebrated in the trumpets and trombones that hang over the beds and in the snare-drum tables in the main parlor. Mardi Gras parades stream past just a block away, on St. Charles Street.
